Threshold Weight: William at the Stone Lintel

William pauses at the threshold. Above the open door, one plain stone crosses the gap. No carving, no announcement: just a beam with work to do.
Follow the weight. Masonry above presses onto the lintel; the stone spans the opening, resisting bending, and delivers that load to its bearings at either end. There the jambs take over, carrying it down through the wall toward the foundation. The empty space below is possible because the load has a route around it.
Side light catches the rough face, then the short ledges where the beam rests. Those contacts are easy to overlook. They are also where the span stops being a solitary stone and becomes part of a structure.
The door can swing. The lintel stays. William looks from one bearing to the other before stepping through: an entrance, held open by what refuses to move.
