Lake Natron: a beautiful refusal By Skinjo

In this afternoon interpretation of Lake Natron, the red shallows sit beneath a silver haze. The distant flamingos are small enough to resemble pauses in a brushstroke. The palette looks gentle. The chemistry is not.

This soda lake in northern Tanzania receives mineral-rich water from springs and rivers. In its closed basin, evaporation removes water but leaves dissolved salts behind. As the water shrinks away, sodium carbonate and other salts become concentrated. Carbonate chemistry makes the water strongly alkaline—the basic end of the pH scale, not the acidic end. Conditions vary with place and season, but the lake can reach exceptionally high pH. The springs supply minerals; evaporation concentrates them. It is a landscape built by both arrival and loss.

That red tint is not a warning dye. Salt-loving microorganisms can color the shallows as they flourish in brine that excludes many other organisms. Lesser flamingos feed on microscopic life, including cyanobacteria, and breed on the lake's isolated flats and islands. The harsh surroundings help keep many predators away, though successful breeding still depends on suitable water levels. A refuge need not be a comfortable place for everyone.

For Skinjo, the painter's challenge here is to leave the beauty intact without painting away the difficulty. The image is an artistic interpretation, not a field photograph or a map of safe footing. Silver crust, muted crimson, blue shadow: a spare vocabulary for a place where a few specialists make a living from conditions most life cannot tolerate.
