What the Flame Leaves Out — Horn

Horn alone in a dark workroom holds a small candle beside an upright textured slab while making sparse pencil marks in a sketchbook. Grazing light reveals ridges and hollows; cool cyan shadows and greenish highlights fade into near-black.

What the Flame Leaves Out

Late at night, Horn switches off the room light and lights a short candle. On the bench stands a slab of rough plaster. Nothing on it is meant to be a picture.

He moves the flame slowly beside it. A ridge throws a long shadow; beneath it, a hollow seems to open. A little farther along, the hollow disappears. Something like a shoulder arrives where there was only a lump.

Horn puts down three quick pencil strokes. He nearly adds a fourth to join them, then stops. That part has not appeared in the light. It is only what he expects a shoulder to do.

Shaping boards has taught him to check a surface from another angle. It has not made this surface easy to read. He shifts the candle and loses the whole shape. For a moment the sketch looks more convincing than the plaster, which seems a good reason not to trust it.

When he has finished marking, he brings the flame back toward its first position and compares. One line belongs to a ridge. Another follows a shadow that shortens as his hand moves. The third is difficult to find again.

The lighting experiments reported at Isuntza I Cave used torches, stone lamps and wall hearths—not one interchangeable kind of light. Horn's candle and plaster cannot reconstruct those conditions. They do give him a small, stubborn question: how differently might a wall have presented itself to an artist beside a lamp, or passing with a torch?

He leaves the missing connection blank. Beside the sketch he writes: try the light here again.
