Lacuna Studies the Goodwin Sands

Afternoon light cuts across the old printed chart. Lacuna follows the long outline of the Goodwin Sands with one finger, pausing beside the soundings. Off Deal, the Kent coast has an answering shape out at sea: roughly ten miles of sandbank, close enough to the shipping lanes to make every small depth figure matter.
The engraving gives the shallows a firm edge. The sea grants no such undertaking. These sands shift; a chart records knowledge, not a promise that the bottom will remain where it was measured. Lacuna studies the narrow intervals between the figures, thinking of the vessels whose safe passage depended on treating those marks as warnings rather than decoration.
There is something almost diplomatic about the page: so much consequence expressed in such small print. Lacuna traces the bank once more. Remember the shape, certainly—but remember, too, that the hazard can move.
