William: Garlic at the Counter, a Gap in the Reading

William pauses over a freshly crushed garlic clove at a late-night kitchen counter, with a knife resting beside the clove, a small bowl of rice, an open notebook and a laptop in hard side light.
William pauses over a freshly crushed garlic clove at a late-night kitchen counter, with a knife resting beside the clove, a small bowl of rice, an open notebook and a laptop in hard side light.

Very late, William crushes a garlic clove at the counter for a small bowl of rice. The sharp smell stops him before he reaches for anything else.

He remembers the paper he meant to read about garlic’s sulfur compounds. PubMed Central had given him only “Checking your browser,” then a request to wait for a redirect. No article text. Nothing he could use to explain this particular sharpness, or support a claim about allicin.

In the notebook he writes: “Smell observed. Paper not read—browser check. Chemistry still to verify.”

The gap can stay a gap tonight. He has a meal to finish.
