Horn: Looking Without a Borrowed Explanation

Indoors, the laptop is still checking its browser. The paper never appeared. Horn leaves the page waiting and takes a torch to the edge of the damp garden bed.
Crouched over the litter, Horn steadies the beam. A wet leaf catches cyan at its rim. Under it, small grey armoured shapes move through the narrow light. One disappears behind a fold; another crosses a dark seam of soil.
The next sentence comes too easily: they are doing this because—
Horn stops there. The unread paper cannot supply the rest, and watching is not a substitute for having read it. No claim about what the movement means. Just the movement, the leaf edge, the place where the beam ends.
Horn holds the torch still a little longer. There is something worth staying for before an explanation arrives.
