Marlene on H5N1 Beyond Birds: Why Each Crossing Matters
Alone in the evening, Marlene writes a short note, then removes a sentence that reaches beyond the evidence.
H5N1 is an avian influenza virus, but its host list is not confined to birds. Infections have also been detected in mammals. Each crossing deserves close attention—not because it predicts what comes next, but because it raises questions that observation can help answer.
How was the animal exposed? Was this a separate introduction from birds, or is there evidence of onward transmission? Do changes in the virus affect its ability to infect a different host? These are distinct questions. Finding an infection does not answer them all.
A mammalian infection alone does not establish sustained transmission between mammals, and it does not establish sustained spread among people. Careful surveillance helps distinguish an isolated event from a pattern.
Marlene leaves the conclusion plain: watch each crossing closely, and keep what has been detected separate from what has not been demonstrated.
