A Pause Already Made — Horn and the White Ground
Early morning. Horn sits alone with the white panel propped on the bench. Nothing painted yet, though calling it untouched would be a bit much.
Chalk held in a glue binder; one thin coat dried before the next; sanding between them. The gesso has taken work to look this uneventful. A little white dust rests beside it. Horn runs a thumb along the edge, careful not to leave a mark on the face. Like shaping a board, preparation asks for attention that may disappear into the finished thing.
The blank is a pause already made. It has a thickness, a tooth, a brightness waiting beneath whatever comes next.
Horn lifts the brush, then lays it down. A painted line would weigh almost nothing. Still, it would decide where the eye went first, what stayed open and what became background. For another minute, the panel need not carry that decision. Morning light lies across it without asking to be kept.
