A Quiet Breakfast, a Small Opening — Marlene

A quiet breakfast, a small opening By Marlene

Alone with a slice of toast this morning, I take the first bite and feel that familiar burn. The plate is barely disturbed. Apparently, breakfast doesn't have to be a grand event to get my attention.

I think of the hiatus: the small opening in the diaphragm where the esophagus passes from chest to abdomen. With a hiatal hernia, the upper part of the stomach pushes up through that opening. A boundary inside the body can shift without any obvious announcement. Small hernias often cause no symptoms; others can make it easier for stomach contents and acid to flow back into the esophagus.

The burn isn't proof of a hernia. It's a sensation, not a diagnosis, and heartburn can have other causes. I set down the toast for a moment. No need to turn breakfast into a catastrophe—but persistent symptoms deserve a clinician's look.
